I’ve recently had the good fortune of working on a fabulous design project with a lovely couple who happen to have diametrically opposed tastes in design. One is a traditionalist with a passion for mixing pattern ,rich colours, antiques and classic design, and the other has a love of clean modern lines, and monochromatic pallets with accents of soft icy tones.
My solution….lots of wine!
Just kidding,( but wine was involved).. actually a challenge like this is where you can earn your decorating stripes.
In the dining room for instance , there was a exotic and rich theme already in the works. The chairs had a stunning paisley motif, and a Moorish design. Susan and I managed to find a shot silk taffeta for the proposed drapery treatment the integrated the rich existing tones , and then sourced a wonderful Italian hand woven trim, that mirrored the motif on the chairs (see enclosed pic)
For the master bedroom, (where compromise was probably invented) we used modern silver grey tones, with accents of cool calming mauves. The owners had a fantastic design already in the works for an impressive upholstered and rich dark mahogany framed headboard. It was done in one of silver toned French silk and viscose velvets, and established a perfect focal point in the massive room. Next we sourced a classically themed Greek key designed area rug and then had our work rooms custom build traditional style chaise to add weight to the far corner of the room.
We upholstered it in a sumptuous and rare Italian silk brocade(insert pic) that provided mauves and spice accent tones that paid homage to an old world sensibility.
The couple was instrumental in providing a blend of styles and tones that will now be an perfect pallet to build upon… I’ll keep you updated as it’s a work in progress.
